It took them a while but Twitter finally added many more countries to its list of localized trending topics. Now you can change your trending list to one of 18 countries but most importantly for us in Jakarta, Twitter finally recognizes Indonesia as one of its fastest growing markets and added it to the local trending list.
From only five countries, Twitter has added Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, and Venezuela. Before today the list had been made up of Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Mexico and the United States.
Twitter also added six new cities but none are in Asia. The new cities are Detroit, Miami, Minneapolis, Rio De Janeiro, Sydney, and Toronto.
When you go to the website, you can change the trending list to one of the localized lists and immediately see what’s trending on those places without having to close the localization window. Localized trending unfortunately isn’t available in most apps, in fact, I don’t know any Twitter app that does this, not even Twitter’s own official apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and BlackBerry.
If you’re a little impatient and want more detailed view of the trending list however, there’s always Trendsmap that displays popular twitter topics all around the world. You can check out what’s popular in any particular country or city and it’s so much more impressive. It can detect where you’re from and display the data accordingly. Trendsmap is very detailed and can show you historical trends as well as popular links, photos and videos that are currently being shared across Twitter.
