This announcement by Twitter yesterday means that by default, in addition to getting email notifications when someone starts following you or sends you a direct message, if people that you follow marks your tweet as favorite or retweets one of your tweet, you’ll get an email in your inbox.
Does this mean your inbox will get flooded? Well, that depends on how often your tweets get favorites or retreated by the people you follow. Remember this, you don’t get a notification if your tweets get faved or retweeted by people following you, only by the people you follow. Capiche? No? Okay, let me try that again with an example.
A follows B, C, and D. A is followed by E, F, and G but A doesn’t follow E, F, or G (what, no follow back? That’s rude! NOT).
If B, C, or D faves or retweets A’s tweets, A gets notification emails. If E, F, or G does the same thing, A doesn’t get any notification email, but if A also follows E and E retweets A, then A would get the email.
In short, emails get sent if either a fave or a retweet is done by people you follow, not by the people following you. If total strangers do it, you don’t get email notifications.
But wait, what’s this? Twitter also added email notification for replies and mentions! Sneaky bastards. This means if anyone sends you a reply or simply mentions your name on Twitter, you’ll get an email!
If your Twitter name is @nick or @justin, you have my sympathies. Why? Think of the horde of fangirls trying to get attention from @nickjonas or @justinbieber and erroneously mention @nick jonas or @justin bieber instead. Or if your name is @budi… well, yeah. I can’t help with that. Split names don’t get your messages sent to your intended recipient! Watch that space!

If you don’t want to get notified by emails every time someone does something to you on Twitter, do the following:
open and login to twitter.com on your computer
click on your name on the Twitter bar and choose Settings
uncheck the boxes for email notification accordingly and click save
Note that if you don’t see the options as shown on the screenshot, Twitter probably hasn’t activated it for you yet, you lucky s.o.b, but just wait. If you’re not getting a flood of emails from Twitter today, you’ll get it soon enough and you’ll suffer from it the same way the rest of us do. Mwahahahahaha!!!

update Apparently notifications for replies and mentions also only get sent if they’re from people you follow, not just from anyone. Well that ruins the fun a bit but on the bright side, it pisses people a lot less.
